Why Is Math Especially Vulnerable?
Reading tends to continue somewhat naturally over the summer — through library visits, casual reading for fun, or simply encountering text while traveling. Math rarely gets this kind of incidental exposure; children don't typically seek out a division or fraction problem on their own.
Procedural skills in particular — the kind that need to become second nature, like computation — fade relatively quickly without use. Understanding a concept and being able to apply it quickly and accurately are two different things, and the latter is especially prone to decline without regular practice.

What Happens in the Classroom Right After School Starts
When a new school year begins, teachers typically spend the first few weeks reviewing key content from the previous year. Because the whole class goes through this review period together, the gap between students who stayed sharp over the summer and those who didn't becomes most visible during this stretch.
Faster-paced classes, such as AAP or advanced sections, tend to spend relatively less time on review before moving into new material. Starting a new grade's first unit with an existing learning gap means building harder content on top of concepts that haven't been fully reinforced yet.
