Quarter-by-Quarter Comparison

Standard Math vs. Advanced Math (AAP)

StandardGrade 3 level (Virginia SOL 3)
  • Data cycle: pictographs, bar graphs, inference and prediction
  • Multiplication & Division facts 0–10 (fluent recall); real-life word problems
  • Fractions: unit fractions, compose/decompose (denominators 2–10); compare fractions
  • Measurement (US & metric), area (unit squares), perimeter; time to minute; money ≤ $5
AAP AdvancedGrade 4 level
  • Data: adds line graphs; place value extended to 9-digit numbers
  • Mult/Div with all 5 representations; multi-digit multiplication (2- and 3-digit × 1-digit)
  • Geometry: lines, angles, symbolic notation; classify quadrilaterals by properties
  • Measurement with fractional units, unit conversions, rectangle area/perimeter formula
Q4 · Apr–JunCurrent
Standard
  • Compare fractions to benchmarks 0, ½, and 1 using area/region and length models
  • Compare fractions with like numerators or like denominators using >, <, = and models
  • Show equivalent fractions (denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10) with region and length models
  • Tell and write time to the nearest minute using analog and digital clocks
  • Elapsed time in one-hour increments within a.m. or within p.m. (find elapsed, end, or start time)
  • Money: value of coins/bills ≤ $5.00; construct a set; compare two sets; make change
AAP
  • Compare fractions to benchmarks 0, ½, 1; compare with like numerators or like denominators; show equivalent fractions with models
  • Real-life fraction comparison: justify solution using visual, verbal, and symbolic representations
  • Tell time to nearest minute; elapsed time in hours AND minutes within a 12-hour period
  • Elapsed time across a.m. and p.m. (find elapsed time, end time, or start time)
  • Multi-digit multiplication continued: multi-step real-life problems (2- and 3-digit × 1-digit)
  • Multiplication/division patterns with input/output tables and function machines; identify and extend rules

Key Points for Parents

If your child is in Advanced (AAP) — they are covering Grade 4 levelcontent. They're learning material one grade above their peers, which requires more abstract thinking and problem-solving.

If your child is in Standard — they are completing Grade 3 level (Virginia SOL 3) SOL standards. End-of-year SOL test preparation is important, and if desired, you can work toward AAP placement next year.
