Grade 5
Grade 5 Math Curriculum · FCPS
Quarter-by-Quarter Comparison
Standard Math vs. Advanced Math (AAP)
- Data cycle: line plots, stem-and-leaf plots; mean, median, mode, and range
- PEMDAS; prime/composite numbers; patterns, input/output tables, and variables
- Fraction & decimal arithmetic (unlike denominators, multi-step); metric measurement conversions
- Geometry: angles & triangle classification, area, volume; probability with Counting Principle
- Circle graphs with statistics; outlier analysis; LCM & GCD; linear inequalities
- Integer operations; exponents & perfect squares (to 20²); absolute value on number line
- Ratios, proportional relationships; four-quadrant coordinate plane; one-step linear equations
- Circle geometry (π, circumference, area); parallelogram & triangle area; proportional reasoning
- Order of operations (PEMDAS) with whole numbers, including parentheses
- Prime and composite numbers (up to 100); prime factorization
- Line plots (dot plots): organizing and analyzing data with title, axes, and key
- Stem-and-leaf plots: organizing and representing data with title and key
- Mean as fair share; median, mode, and range of a data set
- Increasing and decreasing patterns; input/output tables and function machines
- Variables as unknown quantities; writing equations from word problems
- Prime and composite numbers; LCM and GCD of two numbers
- Circle graphs: formulating questions, collecting data, representing with percentages (e.g., 7/20 = 35%)
- Mean as balance point in a line plot
- Effect of adding, removing, or changing a value on mean, median, mode, and range
- Identifying outliers and analyzing their effect on statistical measures
- Linear inequalities from number line graphs; writing with inequality symbols
- Solution sets of one-variable inequalities; checking by substitution or graph
Key Points for Parents
If your child is in Advanced (AAP) — they are covering Grade 6 level (Virginia SOL 6)content. They're learning material one grade above their peers, which requires more abstract thinking and problem-solving.
If your child is in Standard — they are completing Grade 5 level (Virginia SOL 5) SOL standards. End-of-year SOL test preparation is important, and if desired, you can work toward AAP placement next year.
Middle School Strategy — Students who finish Advanced 5th–6th grade can access Algebra I early in middle school, opening the path to AP Calculus AB/BC in high school. Daniel Math Academy specializes in preparing students for this transition.
