Grade 6
Grade 6 Math Curriculum · FCPS
Quarter-by-Quarter Comparison
Standard Math vs. Advanced Math (AAP)
- Circle graphs, outliers & statistical measures (mean, median, mode, range)
- Integer & rational number operations; absolute value; exponents & perfect squares
- Ratios, unit rates & proportional relationships; four-quadrant coordinate plane
- One-step equations & inequalities; circles (π), parallelogram & triangle area
- Histograms; negative exponents, scientific notation; comparing rational numbers
- Two-step equations & inequalities with rational coefficients; algebraic expressions
- Slope & direct variation (y = mx); similar figures, proportions & dilations
- Quadrilateral properties; volume of cylinders; surface area; probability
- Prime and composite numbers; LCM and GCD
- Circle graphs: creating, interpreting, drawing conclusions
- Mean as balance point in a line plot
- Effect on mean/median/mode/range when value is added, removed, or changed
- Outliers: identifying and their effect on statistical measures
- Linear inequalities from a number line; writing and checking solution sets
- Negative exponents as fractions and decimals; patterns with powers of 10
- Scientific notation ↔ standard form; comparing numbers in scientific notation
- Comparing and ordering rational numbers (integers, fractions, decimals, percents; positive and negative)
- Positive square roots of perfect squares 0–400
- Histograms: creating with different intervals, comparing to line plots and circle graphs
- Analyzing patterns and drawing conclusions from histograms
Key Points for Parents
If your child is in Advanced (AAP) — they are covering Grade 7 / Pre-Algebra levelcontent. They're learning material one grade above their peers, which requires more abstract thinking and problem-solving.
If your child is in Standard — they are completing Grade 6 level (Virginia SOL 6) SOL standards. End-of-year SOL test preparation is important, and if desired, you can work toward AAP placement next year.
Middle School Strategy — Students who finish Advanced 5th–6th grade can access Algebra I early in middle school, opening the path to AP Calculus AB/BC in high school. Daniel Math Academy specializes in preparing students for this transition.
